Edmonton contractor planning guide

Planning concrete scanning before cutting or coring

A practical checklist for plumbers, electricians and contractors preparing service openings or floor trenches in commercial and industrial concrete.

Discuss your scanning scope

1. Define the work before defining the scan

Mark the proposed hole, opening or full trench route on a drawing or site photo. Include hole diameters, trench length and width, and whether work involves a floor or wall. Identify any alternative locations that could be considered with the project team.

2. Share what is known about the concrete

Provide available structural and service drawings, slab thickness if known, and information about reinforcement, conduits or post-tension systems. Identify known services and any previous alterations. Missing drawings should be explained rather than replaced with assumptions.

3. Plan site access and coordination

Tell dispatch about the working area, access restrictions, occupied spaces, site contact, working hours and intended schedule. Explain who will perform the cutting or drilling and who will review the findings. Confirm the scanning scope and how findings will be communicated before work begins.

4. Review findings before the next trade starts

GPR responses need interpretation, and some embedded features may not be visible. Review findings against drawings and site conditions before selecting final cut or core locations. Resolve uncertain areas with the responsible site team. Concrete scanning does not replace engineering decisions, excavation utility locating or required approvals.

5. Include the follow-on concrete work

If scanning is part of a larger project, describe the core drilling, concrete cutting, removal or replacement pour you expect. The two Stone Concrete companies quote their own scopes, so responsibilities should be agreed before booking.

Send a useful scanning inquiry

  • Project address and site contact.
  • Marked-up drawings or photos of the work area.
  • Proposed hole sizes, openings and trench dimensions.
  • Concrete thickness if known, access and known embedded features.
  • Schedule, working hours and the follow-on trade scope.
